Q 1) You are working inside a factory. In front of your are three on/off switches, all in their OFF state. These switches are connected to three separate backup generators located near each other outside. Since they are outside, there's no chance you can identify them from inside when they run. Each switch is connected to one and only one generator. Given the time to manipulate and test with the switches, you can run each generator as you wish and set each individual switch in either its ON or OFF state.

To make one and ONLY one trip outside, how can you observe with absolute certainty which generator is connected to which switch, without having to return inside again?

Answer :

To determine which switch corresponds to which generator with only one trip outside, you can follow these steps:

  • Turn on the First Switch: Leave it on for about 10-15 minutes. This will allow the generator it controls to start running and heat up.
  • Turn off the First Switch: After the time has elapsed, turn off the first switch.
  • Turn on the Second Switch: Immediately after turning off the first switch, turn on the second switch.

Leave the Third Switch Off: The third switch remains in the OFF position throughout the process.

Go Outside: Now, head outside to observe the generators.

Identification:

  • Generator 1: If it is running and warm, it corresponds to the first switch (the one you turned on first and then off).
  • Generator 2: If it is running and hot, it corresponds to the second switch (the one currently turned on).
  • Generator 3: If it is off and cool, it corresponds to the third switch (the one that was never turned on).

Q 2) You have eight identical looking and feeling chocolates. Seven contain cordial filling but one contains coconut. The only way to identify the chocolate containing coconut is weight; it is just a tiny bit lighter than the other seven. Provided a simple balance scale (i.e. the scale of justice):

  1.  Is it possible to find the coconut chocolate using the scale three time? If so, how?
  2. Is it possible to find the coconut chocolate using the scale only twice? If so, how?
  3. Is it possible to find the coconut using the scale only once? If so, how
Answer:

1.) Finding the Coconut Chocolate in Three Weighing's: Yes, possible

First Weighing: Split into two groups of 3 and weigh against each other. If one group is lighter, it contains the coconut chocolate; if they are equal, the coconut is in the group of 2 chocolates.
Second Weighing: If in the group of 3, weigh 2 chocolates against each other. The lighter one is the coconut chocolate; if equal, the third is the coconut. If in the group of 2, weigh them against each other.
Conclusion: Identify the coconut chocolate.

2.) Finding the Coconut Chocolate in Two Weighing's : Yes, possible

First Weighing: Split into two groups of 4 chocolates and weigh against each other. The lighter group contains the coconut chocolate.
Second Weighing: Split the lighter group of 4 into two groups of 2 and weigh. The lighter group contains the coconut chocolate.

3.) Finding the Coconut Chocolate in One Weighing : No, not possible

You cannot definitively identify which of the eight chocolates contains the coconut filling with only one weighing, as you would need more comparisons to narrow it down.

Q 3) Why do air conditioners have 'inside-facing' indoor components and separate 'outside-facing' outdoor components?

Answer:
Air conditioners have separate indoor and outdoor components for several reasons:

  1. Heat Exchange Efficiency: The indoor unit absorbs heat from the air, while the outdoor unit releases it, optimizing the cooling process.
  2. Temperature Control: This separation allows for effective temperature regulation in the indoor space.
  3. Noise Reduction: The noisier components (compressor and condenser) are placed outside, reducing noise indoors.
  4. Space Efficiency: Flexible installation options for both units help utilize space effectively.
  5. Improved Air Quality: The indoor unit can focus on circulating and filtering indoor air.
  6. Cooling Performance: The outdoor unit is designed for effective heat dissipation, enhancing overall system efficiency.
